Braces & Sports – Importance of Wearing Protective Mouthguards

Now that summer is here, many children are outdoors playing organized sports such as baseball, soccer, softball, field hockey and basketball. This is also the time of the year when kids are outside participating in all types of fun activities like skateboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing, etc. Additionally, many school-aged children will soon be practicing fall sports like football and basketball. This is why our Montgomery, Wetumpka & Millbrook orthodontists and staff want to remind everyone of the importance of wearing protective mouthguards.

Finding a Mouthguard to Wear

Because we want to help our patients protect their smiles, our practice offers special mouthguards for braces. If you need a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces, please let us know at your next appointment or drop by and pick up one from us. Do not use a mouthguard that needs to be heated and formed on the teeth, as it will pull the braces off.

How a Mouthguard Works

A mouthguard is an inexpensive piece of sporting equipment that is designed to protect your teeth and braces from injury and damage. It works like a protective shock absorber to take the brunt of a blow or hard strike, so your risk of suffering a serious injury is reduced. When you’re wearing a mouthguard, there’s far less chance that you’ll chip or break a tooth, lose a tooth or suffer a jaw injury.

When to Wear a Mouthguard

A mouthguard should always be worn when playing any sports or while taking part in any activity that put the face and mouth at risk for injury. It only takes one fall or a blow to the mouth to receive a serious dental injury that could result in cracked, broken, or lost teeth. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so whenever you’re doing anything that could result in an injury to your mouth, wear a protective mouthguard to safeguard your smile!
